H1N1 flu is a new influenza virus causing illness in people.  The H1N1 virus is contagious and spreads from human to human the same way the seasonal flu spreads. Those infected with H1N1 can infect others from 1 day before getting sick to 5-7 days after.

How do you know if you have the flu? Signs and symptoms include: fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue.  Some people have also experienced vomiting and diarrhea.

Are you a high risk person?  People 65 and older, children younger than 5, pregnant women and those with chronic medical conditions are considered high risk patients for the H1N1 flu.

How to protect yourself:

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water.
  • Alcohol-based hand cleaners can also be used.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
  • Avoid close contact with sick people.

What is the best way to keep from spreading the virus?

  • If you are sick with flu-like illness stay home for at least 24 hours after you fever is gone without out the use of fever-reducing medicines.
  • Keep away from others as much as possible.
