March Letter from President Hoffman

Dear Sisters and Brothers of 4001,

I cannot believe that it is March already! The school year is flying by. Please note that Day on the Hill is coming up fast, Tuesday March 20. Mark your calendars and ask your supervisor for the day off! This is our chance to meet with legislators and tell them what we need from them. It is also our chance to remind them that WE DO THE WORK of the state. If you have never attended, it is inspirational seeing all our Brothers and Sisters, from throughout Council 5 together, holding our legislators accountable for their actions. There is no need to be nervous, you do not meet with legislators alone; we go in groups.

Local 4001 has a goal of 100 members to attend Day on the Hill.

There are buses that come from several areas of the state, so if you are interested in this option, you could possibly get on one of the buses (information available on the Council 5 web site). If you want to drive yourself, the local will pay your mileage. We also pay your lost time for the day.

Sign up by going to AFSCMEMN.ORG and click on REGISTER FOR DAY ON THE HILL. Please do this as soon as possible to insure there will be enough materials and lunches.

The schedule for the day is as follows:

  • 7:30 -10:00 AM Registration & coffee at St Paul RiverCentre (parking ramp is across the street)
  • 9:00-10:00 AM Lobbying Skills Workshop
  • 10:00- 11:00 AM General Session
  • 11:15-12:15 PM Breakout sessions by Legislative District
  • 12:30 Box lunches-provided (Buses will transport to the Capital and back after)
  • 1:30 PM Rotunda Rally
  • 1:45-4:15 Capital Lobbying
  • 5:00-7:00 PM Reception (RiverCentre)

Just a follow-up: The Supreme Court has heard oral arguments in the Janus vs. AFSCME lawsuit and we are now waiting for them to make their decision.  Let’s not rest, we need to keep talking to our coworkers.  If they have not yet had an opportunity to sign a membership card they can contact a local steward, chief steward and they can get a card to them, or have them call Council 5 @ 651-450-4990, or get on your computer and go to AFSCMEMN.ORG and click on member link and they can fill out a membership card right there.

Finally, just another reminder, that both Local 4001 and Council 5 will be having people coming around to work sites talking to people about things from upcoming elections, to Janus, to fee payer conversions. Please do not be surprised when they come around. Contractually we have the right to visit members at the work sites.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

In solidarity,

Joel Hoffman
